Malteser International takes charge of health post in Leogane
Further sectors of relief: Water, sanitation and hygiene
Port-au-Prince/Cologne. Today, the team of Malteser International, the relief service of the Order of Malta for worldwide humanitarian aid, has taken over the health post in Leogane from their Argentinean partners; they had already been working together in the camp since last week. The currently 8-strong team, consisting of medical doctors, nurses, a midwife and a paramedic, provides basic medical assistance in the camp and the surrounding areas. In addition, the team will support urgently needed vaccination campaigns. According to reports of the World Health Organisation some cases of tetanus have occurred as well as suspicions of measles though this has not been confirmed yet.

Rainy season on the way – Malteser International fears worsening of humanitarian situation
Leogane/Port-au-Prince/Cologne. Malteser International is concerned about the forthcoming rainy season that will again worsen the humanitarian situation in the crisis region. Dr. Georg Nothelle, head of the Malteser International assessment team, upon his return after two weeks in Haiti points out: “The people are in urgent need of plastic sheets to protect themselves.” Furthermore, hygiene promotion is essential in addition to public health care: “The construction of latrines as well as some kind of waste management have to be combined with health care measures in order to prevent a possible outbreak of epidemics”. Moreover, many more houses, slums and ruins are on the verge of sliding away and collapsing due to the impending and intense tropical rains.

Earthquake Haiti: General medical care following first aid assistance
Leogane/ Port-au-Prince/Cologne. 14 days after the devastating earthquake Malteser International has started to concentrate its activities on general medical care in addition to first aid assistance at the health post in Leogane. Malteser International humanitarian coordinator Beate Maass explains that the construction and extension of the medical infrastructure is still the priority. “Together with our Argentinean friends about 2,000 patients have been provided with medical assistance in the health camp in Leogane.” Now, above all, post operative care has to be provided as well as general daily medical assistance. By request of the Haitian public health authority, ambulatory medical assistance is to be expanded to the people in the camps in the areas surrounding Port-au-Prince.
